The Long Table, part 2
Bread for five thousand
Daniel Okoro
Luke 9:10-17
The disciples want to send the crowd home before dinner. Jesus hands them five loaves, two fish and a job they are not qualified for.
The day has been long and the place is remote. The disciples have a sensible plan: send everyone into the villages to find food. Jesus answers with a sentence that still makes leaders nervous: “You give them something to eat.”
“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.”
Luke 9:16
Nothing in the story starts with abundance. It starts with not enough, offered anyway. Jesus blesses it, breaks it and gives it back to the disciples to pass around. Twelve baskets of leftovers suggest that the table was never the problem.
Talk it over
Where are you tempted to send people away because you feel you have too little to offer?
What are your five loaves and two fish this season?
How could your home group feed someone this month, literally or otherwise?
Go deeper
Compare this meal with the Last Supper in Luke 22:14-20. Notice the same four verbs: took, blessed, broke, gave.
