Letters to a Young Church, part 5
A quiet life
Daniel Okoro
1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
Paul tells a young, excited church to make it their ambition to live quietly, mind their own business and work with their hands. It is more radical than it sounds.
The church in Thessalonica is already known for its love. Paul does not ask them for something new. He asks them to keep going, and to do it in an unexpected direction: quieter, steadier and more ordinary.
“Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands.”
1 Thessalonians 4:11
In a culture that rewards being seen, Paul describes faith that looks like showing up for work, paying your bills and treating your neighbors well. The quiet life is not a small life. It is a life that wins the respect of outsiders without trying to.
Talk it over
What would change if your ambition were a quiet life rather than a notable one?
Where does your work, paid or unpaid, already serve your neighbors?
Who has shown you what steady faithfulness looks like?
